Issues with read-only files

I've got a strange issue with MS Office 2003 files (Word and Excel). If I browse to a file via Explorer and double-click to open it, there's no issue, but if I open Word/Excel then File/Open to browse to open the exact same file, it opens as Read Only. Ive searched Microsoft and via Google to no avail and I'm not sure where to go next.
