Hello,

My pc has been running on Win2K Pro since new, and it has all kind of programs/softwares installed on. I've recently added a new HD, and installed XP Pro on this new drive. And here are my questions:

(1) This pc is on a domain. During XP installation, I joined it to the same domain, with the same pc name. Now I can log into XP fine, but can't log into Win2K. Error: "The system cannot log you on to this domain because the system's computer account in its primary domain is missing or the password on that account is incorrect."

I've searched support on MSN, and they suggest the cause is the password for the computer account & LSA secret are not synchronized. However their instruction to fix it is really confusing.

Can someone offer better advice to fix this issue?

(2) How can I use the previously installed programs/softwares in the XP environment without having to re-install them?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Allan

The reason you have to re-install the programs is because the new XP Installation does not have any of the information on them in the new registry.

As far as the domain problem, I'm assuming they are running Active Directory?

I joined it to the same domain, with the same pc name"

But you already have a different SID registered for that macine account.

Use a different name, and add a second machine account to the Domain.

To LloydSev:
Yes, they're running on Active Directory.

To bcastner:
I should've consulted more info before installing XP Pro, but that wasn't the case. As per your suggestion, how can I rename my WinXP's account? If I re-install XP on the 2nd hd, will my Win2K's user account be fixed?

Thanks

Allan

You can rename it by right-clicking My Computer, Computer Name.

Be sure to make the Domain entry for the new machine.

Thanks bcastner (a star for you). The renaming method works nicely. Here's what I did, just in case others have the same issue:
- log back to WinXP, right-click My Computer -> Properties -> Computer Name tab -> click "Change" button 'To rename this computer or join a domain ...' -> rename to new computer name - MAKE SURE IT'S A *NEW* COMPUTER NAME
- restart computer -> start Win2K -> login locally using admin account -> right-click My Computer -> Properties -> Network Identification tab -> and use NetworkID button to re-join domain - USING THE *OLD* COMPUTER NAME (or rename it to something different than the one used in XP).

After restart, I can now login to both Win2K & WinXP.

Back to my question #2, is there a way to use my programs without having to re-install them in XP? Will updating registry in XP do the job? If so, what's the proper way to do it?

Thanks again.

Allan

You will need to install any application under both Win2K and WinXP in order for them both to work properly.
Additionally, they will have their own security SIDs, so keep each application on the HDD that the operating system works.

Already then. Guess I'll have to dig them up now.

Thanks all for your help.
