I have exhange 5.5 configured to not allow relaying (followed the microsoft article and have the "Host and clients with these IP address" selected with no entries). This configuartion has been working fine for our office config for quite some time. I am trying to configure our database program to send mail via the SMPT option. When I try to send mail, I get error 550 could not relay. I tried the following without sucess;
1) Adding Test workstation IP address in the "Host and clients connecting to these IP Internal Address"
2) Adding Test workstation IP address in the "Hosts and clients with these IP address"
3) Tried selecting "Hosts and clients that successfully authenticate" option.

None of the above worked. Any idea what I am doing wrong or what config is needed?

Thanks.

I had the same problem of using internet mail settings did not work after stopping the relay.
All you have to do if it is using any type of email client like Outlook Express or whichever go to that account properties and go to server page and check my outgoing mail server requires authentication. Then you will be fine.
I hope this will help.
Exchange server wont accept internet mail settings for smtp to be sending somebody else other than global address list.

Take care let me know it will solve your problem.

Thanks for your response however it doesn't solve my problem. I have no issues using outlook in the office, just trying to send via my database program using the SMTP option. The from address I'm using is a vaild e-mail address in my G.A.L.

I understand that it is an actual email adr. in GAL.
You have to make sure at that database program when it is trying to send the mail It must be authenticated by server.
Because of Smtp rules.
and also go to Exchange server where you go routing restrictions and select "Hosts and clients that succesfully authenticate"
Restart your services it should be fine. I had the similar problem people couldnt send mail using outl.expr. even though they were on the lan.Because we had to turn authentication on on the server and email clients then all the problems solved and i got the same error messages you had.
I hope it will help you.
Please let me know

Thanks, I got it to work. I used the "The Hosts and clients that succesfully authenticate" option but I guess I was using the wrong config in my database for login. It works. Thanks for your help!
