I have a little pentium 166MMX which hasnt really worked well over the last 2 years (loads of weird errors), now it doesnt start at all , the power leds and HD leds fire up (also CD) but the screen stays black and it doesnt beep at the expected time , it just stays there... so whats wrong ? Is the motherboard gone or the cpu or what... it also happened the same thing to another PentiumIII I have (had) :p

I just now im getting mental with these 2 computers (Ive tried swapping & removing everything)

Guessing only, SWAG if you insist, 1) memory 2)power 3a)M/B BIOS 3b)CPU. You need a logic probe to see if the processor is running. I knwo of only one other thing in addition to Ed's 4 item list; a badly dead PCI modem.

But most likely memory. I think. [sig]<p>Clive<br><a href=mailto:clive@digitalsky.co.za>clive@digitalsky.co.za</a><br><a href= > </a><br>[/sig]

My best guess would be the motherboard. [sig][/sig]

Sounds like the motherboard is powering up okay.
Try disconnecting all drives including the hard disk. Disconnect them at the motherboard.
Make sure the CPU and memory cards are properly connected.
Now power up and see what happens.

When you are messing about changing things it is easy (for me anyway) to put a parallel cable in upside down. Some boards don't like that, or it could be a faulty cable.

If still no response test with memory card from another machine.

Good luck. [sig][/sig]

Does it beep at all? You said not at the expected time.
