Hello everyone,
I have setup a FE server with allowed relay only for BE.
After seeing mail sent out from BE (in headers) I tried using SMTP connector where:
smarthost was : [ip of the FE]
bridgehead server: [BE]

I noticed in headers that message was "looping"

(note: mail was sent to an outside domain)

Is this normal? Am I missing something?
Many thanks for your time!

thanks Marc,
Strange but ones roting service was restarted on BE messages are gone and mail is not being pushed out at all.
I will try smtpdiag and see what comes of it.
Thanks!

Little update for those in same topic....
I used the smarthost (IP) on BE smtp and mail is going out just fine. This means I had to give up SMTP connector idea....hm...still curious so if anyone has info to share it would apprechiated.
Thanks!

There is no need to set it to smarthost, you should set it to relay, and accept the relay from that address on the FE of course.

If 'something' 'somewhere' gives 'some' error, expect random guesses or no replies at all.

Hi Marc,
I have FE setup to relay (only) from BE server....what is there to be done on BE? (I thought that connector or smarthost IS that pointer of all mail traffic going outbound).
Also, while using SMTP connector SMTPdiag passed all but I did get message hours later:
Code:
The following recipient(s) could not be reached:

  some@external.com on 8/7/2007 3:51 AM
A configuration error in the e-mail system caused the message to bounce between two servers or to be forwarded between two recipients. Contact your administrator.
  <FE.domain.com #4.4.6>

Seems like my connetor is causing issue it is supposed to resolve.
Thanks for the help!

If you want to use the smarthost, use it where SMTP mail is going OUT to the internet, in your case, the FE.
The FE has to be set to ACCEPT relaying from the BE, not TO the BE, or you get the looping.

On the backend, you set the connector to relay TO the FE (without smarthost)

Hi Marc,
I belive that is how it was setup.
1.SMTP of FE has granted relay only to BE.
2.BE has the smtp connector to [192.168.1.15] FE with local bridgehead of BE with address space of "*" for all the domains.
3. smarthost were removed from SMTP of BE
4. connector is in First Routhing group where BE and FE are members (there is also 2nd BE2-master that is not involved in connector quite yet)
5. routing and smtp services restarted on both BE and FE servers.

This is the only FE - OWA and https.
Then...I started getting the looping errors.
Does setup sound right?
