Hi, there

recently, I got problem in our w2kserver, I have a folder" fa" in server, then I create subfolder"sub-fa" under it,I shared "sub-fa" and set up security to let every one has permission to access it.but unfortunally client(nt or w2k) can't access it by using UNC "//server/fa/sub-fa".but if I shared the parent folder"fa",every one can access it through UNC
"//server/fa/sub-fa",I think sharing just make it visible, have no effect on security, but why it doesn't work if i didn't share parent folder.if any one has clue let me know. Thanks in advance.

when you shared the "sub-fa" , did you try connecting directly to "\\server\sub-fa" ?

Rgao,

As Brontosaurus said the share will be \\server\sub-fa.

It sounds like you are getting a little confused over shares. When you share a folder no matter where on the server it will be it will ALWAYS be shared as \\servername\share name.

Ash.

Ash & Bronto nailed this, rgao. In addition, however, you are correct - Sharing has no effect on File Security. That's why we have NTFS permisions.

Quick rundown -
"Sharing permissions" = "Which users are allowed to connect to this share from a network client?"
"NTFS Permissions" = What can I do to the files, whether accessing locally or via a network share?"

If the 2 are combined, then the most restrictive apply. EG - You set Share Permissions to "Everyone - Read Only" and NTFS permissions to "Domain Admins - Full Control", "Everyone - Read Only". The result is that ALL USERS (including Domain Admins) get Read only access from a network client. If however, they use the local machine - DA's get Full Control and Everyone else get's read only.

Cheers,
Sam
