Is RTM version slower than RC?

Anybody running RTM version? I've installed it as multiboot option on my main machine - 64 bit - with the intention of moving to it as my main desktop. Unfortunately, its much more sluggish than all the betas and RCs I installed on my test machines! Conversely, my vista (32 bit) installation on the same machine has been steadily improving, and I think I finally find it acceptable performance (any who know me will know I've not been at all happy with Vista). One oddity - as I intend running virtual machines in my 64 bit win7, I upped my RAM from 4 to 8GB. This improved the response of the 32 bit Vista (which can't even use the extra 4GB)! It hasn't made any difference to win7. One particular issue is the XP virtual machine you can run in win7 - I have an old 16 bit app I need, so tested this feature in the RC - worked fine, so I was happy to go 64 bit. On the RTM, it takes 30 seconds to 1 minute for virtual app to start in win7 (5-10 in RC).

So just wondering if anybody else has had performance/response issues with the RTM compared to RC.

btw - my main test machine I originally built to put vista on nearly 3 years ago (dual core AMD with 4GB RAM, ok graphics card) - but abandoned for my current machine (triple core AMD, was 4GB RaM, now 8, onboard ok graphics) because Vista was so annoying and slow on it about a year ago. As mentioned, vista good on this machine. I haven't yet put the RTM on the test machine (obvious comparison test when I get time)

Vista still uses much more memory
Win 7 is just a little faster with booting but not much (in my case)
I like it more then vista to be honest but vista has improved and would not mind working with it if i have to

I think it may be Aero that's causing the slowness/hesitation. I generally have been accessing the test win7's via remote desktop - which turns aero off of course. Turning it off on main machine immediately makes it feel more responsive. Perhaps my graphics isn't up to it! (onboard on main machine scores 4.1 on the aero windows experience, card on test machine scores 5.2).

PS. Not a lot of activity on this forum!

RTM should perform no worse than RC on any given box - if you're getting noticeable sluggishness then it's time to look for issues, probably starting with looking in the event log for errors and looking at Task Manager for anything taking up too much CPU time.

Switching from 4GB to 8GB shouldn't make any day-to-day difference in 64-bit until you start doing things that use it, such as running several VMs. More importantly, it shouldn't make any difference whatsoever in 32-bit. If 32-bit has sped up it's either a coincidence or because something at the BIOS level wasn't working properly beforehand.

Can't really say that I have seen much performance differences between Release Candidate and RTM. They seem to be much the same performance-wise to me.

One thing to remember is that XP Mode Virtual Machine is still in Beta and requires updating (or checking for updates) for both the Virtual Machine and the XP VHD part of it. The virtual machine may seem a bit slow to load if you watch the progress bars (Starting and Integration) but after they have completed you are at the Desktop and ready to go with no sign of the "old" XP progress bars and loading of the operating system routine etc.

It is too early to say that the activity on this forum is slow, I do hope to see it pick up after Windows 7 is released. I hope it doesn't go the way of the Vista Forum which only has about 5000 members.

Nelviticus - it was a clean install of win7 on a machine that as I say runs Vista very well (and XP even better) - and 'sluggishness' was evident from the start. I have now tried an RTM on the test machine, and it seems very similar to RC. Never have put RC on my main machine, and don't intend doing so, so can't compare RC & RTM on that - but have another test machine (single core AMD 2800+, 1.5GB RAM) that I built for vista beta testing 4 years ago (which doesn't have better graphics than my main machine) and win7 is quick on that too.

The slggishness isn't terrible, but it is noticeable compared to all the beta & RC installations I've done on test machines.

Linney - take your point about the virtual machine being in beta - though I'd expect it to perform similarly on RC as RTM. Perhaps its just me! Having finally got Vista working almost as well as XP the test versions of win7 had me expecting a much better experience when I moved to it, so sod's law becomes operational I believe! As usual the move is really forced by the need to support win7 for my customers, which without using it on a daily basis I wouldn't feel comfortable doing. Without this requirement I would definitely still be running XP as my main desktop. It will be interesting to see what impact the Chrome O/s has - I think there is a chronic need to STOP having to change operating systems every few years - evolution has to be better than revolution. Which is why businesses are not in a rush to lose XP. I'm not sure the market will sustain Microsoft's windows model - the next couple of years should be interesting.
