I have Avaya CM5.2 running and 2 PRIs. They are both protocal a on the trunk and signaling group. From what I've read protocal a is AT&T custom or NI1 which would be configured if the CO has a 4ESS switch. If it were protocal b then it would be NI2 and come from a 5ESS switch. I also read that 5ESS is the only switch (not 4ESS) that can pass CPN name and number. My company passes CPN name and number but the trunk groups are configured for protocal a. I'm a little confused.

A #4ESS is a toll switch (regional) switch and usually terminates your long distance trunks. A #5ESS is a local switch that would be used for your DID/DOD service. As you mentioned, protocol A is AT&T Custom and is usually associaated with the 4ESS. Your local service may have been ordered with AT&T Custom instead of NI2.

Are you taking erors on your D channels?
