HI

Standard edition of 5.5. The Priv.EDB size has grown to 15GB. I archived emails with large attachments from several mailboxes. The pst files were a total of 1.5GB. The size this morning is still 15GB. I have retention turned off. The online defrag ran last night but didn't recover any of the space. Any thoughts?

Thanks

i had read the FAQ but obviously not thoroughly. Sorry, missed the part about the single instance store..attachments in sent and inbox.

Offline Defrag should help

It may or may not, depending on how much white space the db has in it. But it won't change how quickly the database reaches 16GB of resl data - regulating this factor is the key to not having the information store service shut down when it runs out of expansion room.

I went ahead and set up a 2nd exchange server. I've moved over a few mailboxes thus far. They add up to somewhere around 4GB. Today i still see the size of the priv.edb file at close to 16GB. Event 1221 says there is 2MB of white space.

Yes, that is entirely possible. Even though you've moved 4GB of data over to the new server, if every mail item you've moved has just one mailbox that refers to it left on the original server, then you haven't cleared any space on the old server (as it needs a copy of every object that is refered to by the local mailboxes). That's why it's a good idea to group departments etc together on a single server, as they are more likely to share some common messages.

Will an offline defrag help? All mailboxes will likely have at least 1 email referencing everyone else.

sorry just saw the post by referencing the offline. all users have outlook 2003 in cached mode so if it does shut down should still have access to emails.

Have in process of planning the upgrade to 2K3 but won't be able to for a few weeks. This is essentially the only option then?

Thanks

Are in process of deleting all attachments of certain size from all mailboxes (inbox, sent, deleted) so that should reduce the size as long as all references to attachments is gone.

Noticed priv.edb on 2nd server is small. Why wouldn't the mailboxes on new server be stored in this IS ?

thanks for the help

As I understand it, until you do an offline defrag the size of the file remains the same. Look for event logs 1221 (I think) which you will see as long as you have maintenance turned on. that will give you the exact amount of available space in both the priv and the pub spaces....

They are - all mailboxes reference content on the local priv.edb file.

Wanted to provide an update. The offline defrag had not been done on this server before. After performing the defrag we were able to recover a sizeable amount and are now below 10GB on the IS.

That has been my experience too, it depends on a number of factors but offline defrag always helps at least a bit but often a lot.
