I have a small database I run on my XP Pro box, I have a DSL connection and I wanted to know if it was possible for me to connect my Laptop to my XP box remotely and run my database.

Can XP be setup as incoming VPN?

Thanks
JP

Yes. Use the New Network Connection Wizard.

In addition, Remote Desktop is ideal for this. Create the VPN tunnel first, and use RD to access the application.

Thanks for the reply

Is remote desktop like PC Anywhere wher you remotely control the other computer? I really want to connect to the remote as if on a LAN.

Thanks
JP

The Remote Desktop client allows you to connect to a remote machine as you, not as a remote controlled user as in the paradigm of PC Anywhere.

It will logout any active user session. You have a true logon as if you were the user at the remote site logging on.

Thanks will set this up and let you know how I got on

Regards
JP

Would it be best to first purchase a new DSL Router with VPN pass through, maybe something from Linksys?

JP

Having the router act as a VPN endpoint is a terrific convenience.

Most residential routers will support pass-through, although staying current on any firmware is a good idea. This feature is often screwed up in early firmwares.
