You should be able to use a DVD burner on the 2000 machine. Ensure though that the product requirement lists 2000, so that you know they have developed a Windows 2000 driver.
The Burner lists Windows 2000 on the box for software i would think this would include drivers for the Hardware... I installed the Burner but was unsuccessful in getting the Burner to be recoginized when trying to burn a DVD.... Is there anything im missing or doing incorrectly when setting this up?
Windows 2000 has no native burning support. What burning software are you using? The DVD *DRIVE* will be recognized by the OS, using native drivers, but it will not burn unless your burning software supports the DVD burner. I am assuiming you have a burning software. Was it included with the burner? Did you replace a CD-RW with this DVD unit? Are you using a retail burning software? Please give us a little more information regarding your software complement, as well as how you got to this point, hardware-wise.
Im using the Bundled software that came with this particular Burner its ULEAD software and i know that the box list Windows 2000... We are trying to add a DVD Burner for backup purposes for backup of software that needs to go off site... Instead of paying 200+ dollars and 70+ for a tape each time we run a backup we want to try to go with a burner... The backup software is Nova Backup 7.1 and we tried to run a backup and kept asking to insert a Disc... I would have thought that the software that came with the DVD would work since it has 2000 listed... I dont know what other information but let me know Thank you
OK... I have a few additional questions with this new information coming to light.
1. Does the DVD burner work by itself - i.e. if you start the ULead software can you burn a DVD? If so, then there may be an incomapatibility issue between the ULead and the NovaBACKUP. The ULead software, BTW is really poor quality software in my opinion - I use Nero, and nothing else - I like the interface and the stability.
2. Does the NovaBACKUP work when backing up to another target, say a file on another drive or perhaps a tape drive? If so, then the above possible incompatibility suggestion stands. How about to a CD in the new burner - have you tried it? If this works, then I would suspect your media. Some DVD burners can be particular about the DVD media given to them. Are you using the RIGHT media? What I mean by this is: Is the drive a "+" drive and you might be trying to use "-" media? I am not saying anything about intelligence, but sometimes this question can jog memories.
I also noticed that the software says it only backs up to + media. This is what it looks like to me from the free download section of the NovaStor website. Could this be part of your issue?
I really havent tried to experiment with other software i have heard mixed opinions about Nero and Nova so i plan on trying both im just trying to get it to work first before i experiment with software... I have yet to try burning software using some other Ulead Software i can try that next... As for the versions im using what came with the Software bundle but it installed with no problems and ive run a backup on the server using the software to a spot on the network drive to test and it ran with no problems im not sure if the software it self has to be server/pro in order just to burn a disc... As for the Disc goes im Using + R and + RW.... And i do know that the drive in fact will run both - and + formats...
Here is the quote I was reading from the free downloads section of the NovaStor website - "Easily backup to any disk drive, including CD-R/RW and DVD-R/RW (and DVD+RW) drives, SCSI/EIDE Tape Drives, IOMega Zip/Jaz/Click drives, hard drives, and more."
This says to me that if you are using RW media, you must use the "+" designation. If you are using R media, you can use +/- media. Are you using -RW media?
As far as the backup software is concerned, if they offer a server version, you should probably use the server version in a server environment. There ARE differences...
Bundled software is usually stripped versions of retail software. What they strip out, I cannot say, but you will usually fare better buying a retail boxed version of a burning software. I have used the Nero 5 (never tried Nero 6 in any system, yet) in a server before, and I have never had any issues. It also worked with the Veritas backup-to-disc function. I am still suspecting media or software incompatibilities, in your particular case. Let me know what happens.
We do have a Veritas Backup Exec version 8.6 i believe will that backup to a DVD do you know? I might try that as well since we already have that program installed...
