Is the Event Mib too heavyweight to monitor a local mib attribute?

If you have to write Event MIB code, yes.

If Event MIB already exists and is working probably not.

Just my opinion though.

I will use the latest net-snmp Event MIB.
Does it implement Event MIB efficient enough?

No idea. I think testing is the only to know for sure.
