Hey Chris,

I've been working with CF since version 2 and I've never had any problems upgrading between versions and it's always been pretty safe. I've found that with CF 4.5, Allaire joined the ranks of MS by putting out a release that had a number of serious flaws. I've been involved in troubleshooting a number of issues that were traced back to bugs in CF that were not addressed in a timely manner. I was very disappointed to see this as I've always been a strong CF supporter.

I would be very cautious about upgrading to CF 5.0 based on how they handled 4.5 and especially since Macromedia took them over. I think time will tell if Macromedia puts profits ahead of quality and allows Allaire to produce a quality product or rushes them to get new versions out the door.

I always wait about a year to upgrade MS products as I let the rest of the world do the initial testing and bug fixes and let others have security holes found on their systems. By the time I upgrade, I can usually find lots of information on problems I run across since by that time, they're old issues. With Allaire, I would wait 6 months in a corporate environment to see what bug fixes they release. Being a CF hosting service though, I'll actually have to upgrade sooner so I'll be one of those finding the bugs this time.

Just my 2 cents worth,
GJ
