Hey all,

I recently installed Win2k Professional with SP2 and it worked fine. More recently I have been having an annoying problem. Whenever I am online I get a problem with a BSOD (Blue Screen Of Death). It doesn't seem to happen unless I am using lots of memory or lots of processing power. I can usually force the error by running PaintShop Pro 7 with 6000x6000 image, resizing it to 7000x7000. Win2k can handle this fine when I am NOT online. But when I am online it crashes. I have tried this several times for about a week now, with consistent results. The blue screen I get is;

I have also received this error, but much less frequently;

After the error I have to press the OFF button. If I press the RESET button, my PC speaker starts to play a wonderful tune!! - I am told this indicates a serious hardware fault.
I have a DiamondMM SupraExpress 56i V Pro Internal Modem which uses Beta drivers in Win2k, so I suspect that these are causing the errors. I really need to try a different modem to solve this one I think. Any ideas?

I have checked my hard drive for errors and I have disabled IIS5 during one of the tests. I have ran a connection to the internet without any other programs running.

In short, it works fine when I am offline. Blue screen when online. Please help!!!

I think you are on the right track with trying a different modem. The BSOD error you are getting is most commonly a driver\device issue. Good luck.

This is most likely a buggy device driver or a backup utility or virus scanner.

Microsoft has an excellent blue screen web cast. It only takes an hr or so to view and you'll get tons of info

One more thought. Go to your system 32 directory and replace the ntoskernal.exe from a known good source if you can.

I have been experiencing the same thing. My error messages are the same. My situation is somewhat different though. I have DirecPC (no at all an endorsement!) which I uninstalled the software because of a driver problem within the program... I kept getting an error saying a driver was not installed or configured properly and that I should try reinstalling the software to correct the problem. I tried reinstalling several times without success. I then tried uninstalling to start over with a new install. When I uninstalled the DirecPC software and restarted the machine it would give me the blue screen requiring a hard reboot. Some characteristics of the crash are as follows:

1. If I quickly disable my anti-virus software it would not crash nearly as quick.
2. Disabling the Norton firewall also extended the life of the pc before the crash.
3. I attempted to zip some files for backing up the system and every time it got to some file in the folder located under C:\Documents and Settings\[username]\ it would crash the system. I haven't been able to determine what file this is.
4. Scanning/searching for a file also causes it to crash.
5. I have tried doing a defrag several times but it gets to the 14% mark and crashes every time.
6. At reboot it finds an Unknown Hardware and is unable to determine what it is. When searching for a driver for this new hardware, the machine crashes.
7. After a reboot it goes through a disk check and sometimes it finds problems and fixes them and other times it does not find problems.

Hmmm... I could go on but perhaps this may help someone else having the problem or give someone working on the problem a clue... At any rate, by the time there is any fix for this I will have reformatted my hard drive and reinstalled everything from scratch...

I have been experiencing this exact same problem, and I was wondering if any of you installed Norton Utilities 2002 and/or Norton Internet Security 2002 (Antivirus and Personal Firewall) prior to receiving this error.

verbal11, I can now tell you with certainty that a reformatted harddrive and complete re-install fixes the problem! I'm guessing it is something fairly simple and probably has something to do with a wayward driver that affects tcp/ip or other communications hardware... just guessing because I really don't know. I know my problems all started after DirecPC started tweaking some parts of my DirecPC installation... then they told me to contact my pc manufacturer to fix it... As Gervus indicated, it is most likely a buggy device driver... if we only knew which one. I had started going through many of the drivers and renaming them one-by-one and rebooting but who's got time for that???

I do use Norton's Personal Firewall but it is an earlier version (2000) than the one you mention. I've had no problem with it yet.

Hey ppl!

I forgot about this thread, but I am going to conclude it by saying that I solved the problem with my computer by changing the modem to a different one. It turns out that the Windows 2000 drivers (which are beta anyway) for the Diamond Supraexpress 56i V Pro Series SUP 2560 were to blame for the problems I was experiencing. My Win2k installation is running fine on my old External Pace 56k Voice Modem.

My friend is using a Diamond modem and he found that it was fine in Win98, but when he converted to Win2k it had similar problems, just locking up etc.

Now that I have solved the problem, I would like to thank those who took the time to help me out and also to pass on this information to those with similar scenarios. Since I have fixed this problem I have only had one crash with Win2k! Whoo Hoo!

I experienced the similar problem when upgrading Win98 to Win2k. When at the middle stage of Saving Settings, the blue screen will come up, and the installation is terminated. I have formated my hard driver, but the problem is still unsolved. Anyone has any ideas on this? Thanks a lot!

i have just moved my computer turned it on it loaded windows and 5 minutes later i came back to a blue screen saying the lkbdflt2.sys file failed to load.

Subsequently my machine will not start in safe mode, normal or even command prompt.

Now I'm really confused

I´ve had the BSOD problem for a while (recently installed XP), but Roxio solved it for me by issuing an DirectCD update found on their homepage. XP_Up_Platinum is the name of the file. I´m sure it wont cure all of your problems, but it worked for me.

I have been getting the same error message in the BSOD...
I am running Norton 2001 AV. I have a 3com with T1 access...
So I don't think it is the internet ....
I am starting to think it is the Norton... I had win2k up and
running on this box for about 3 months then loaded on Norton...
A few days later the BSOD started to occur..

A common problem it appears. I have had W2Kpro for a month now and I am into my countless install. A bargain upgrade has cost me about the same as the full version. New modem, new video card and a few pieces of software. So much for the hcl which brings little help. Fortunatly amid the frustration I'm enjoying the experience of discovery.

Even the updated drivers seem to have caused more of a nuscance.

I should have know better! I tried a beta version of W2K 2 years ago and it was bad then. It spent less than 2 hours on my system.

My process of illimination has concluded that the Nvidea TNT2 M64 32Mb graphics card I upgraded to is the problem even though it exist on the HCL. I have a limited installation and have a back up before I installed the Manufacturers Display Driver and this seemed quite stable.

I run Norton AV 2000 but have found not much of a problem with it. For RAM consuming apps it does seem to cause a problem though.

Dual boot seems to be the solution. Sorry W98 all is forgiven even if you are the First Edition. AARRRHHH!!! It seems W98 holds a grudge. Dual boot worked perfectly fine until I converted my W2K drive to NTFS. Now I can only boot into W2K.

If you dual boot with Win98 and Win2k you can't use NTFS because Win98 can't read this file system. Also you need to install windows 98 before windows 2000 if you want to dual boot. Otherwise some Win2k crucial files may be overwritten by Win98. Check for update drivers for your video card on the manufacturers website. I personally believe that if you do get win2k up and running, it is the best of the Windows Operating systems (I have not tried XP). And while it's probably too late, Microsoft offers an upgrade advisor which checks to make sure your hardware and software is compatible with win2k.
