IP403 can't get files from Manager 1

Hi, I have inherited an IP403 and bricked it by trying to upgrade. I hope one of you might be able to help get it back functioning.

I have it to a point where the status light on the front panel is red. I have taken out the trunk cards since I heard this is the first step in recovery. I can see the loader message (v0.81 4MB Flash on CPU revision 0x0502) through the serial port and enter AT-X commands (AT-X, AT-X2, AT-X3, AT-X4) and get Erase responses, but when I restart the 403 afterwards I don't get the stream of bootup messages.

The 403 has an IP address of 192.168.42.6 and my XP machine is on the same subnet (I have a crossover LAN cable so it's just the two of them). I can see using Wireshark that the 403 is sending out a BOOTP request every second or so but the Manager is not responding to them. I think I have Windows firewall turned off and I uninstalled ZoneAlarm in case it is interfering.

I have the software v3.0 on CD (Manager v5) but suspect I may need an earlier version.

Anyone please got any suggestions where to go from here?

what is your working directory set to? is the correct bin file in there?

I don't think you need a crossover cable(I never need one), also is the Bootp request from the address expected?

go into the uplink port on the 403 then you can switch quickly if you need to, but you should be ok with a regular cord.
you need the bootp entry set to your MAC address and it needs to be set to the IP address of the IP403 and the correct 403.bin
I thought that it would come up with the default IP address of 192.168.42.1 not x.x.x.6
You should see on the bottom of the manager application what bootp request is coming in

Westi, I have found it comes up with the original address after AT-X ing it until it takes the bin file then it goes to 42.1 It has caught me out before

My problem is that Manager is not showing any sign of seeing the bootp request come in, and there's nothing showing up in the tftp log. The poor 403 is sending out bootp requests til it's blue in the face (I can see them in Wireshark) and getting nothing back from Manager.

Looking at the Wireshark interpretation of the bootp request, under "bootp flags" it says "client IP address 0.0.0.0" and "Boot file name not given" (ie the 403 may not be requesting ip403.bin). Could this be why Manager is ignoring the request?

So I did AT-X again and this time it completed and no error message- but still nothing in Manager or the tftp log.

Pretty much details what you need to do.

I would follow that to the letter then see if you still have a problem dishing out the bin files.

Or you could try using manager installed on another laptop (if you are lucky enough to have one with the right port knocking about

Thanks. I have followed that, except that I don't need to press Escape in the terminal window to get the loader prompt and I don't see any startup messages after the loader message.

Nor do I get anything at all in the tftp log window other than the one-line startup message.

In your first post you said you think you have windows firewall off?

Try stopping the services to make sure its off.

If you do not need to press ESC then it is already out of software

You just need to be sure that the bootp entrie has the right mac adres, ipadres and bin file

Sometimes it keeps the old ipadres

Be sure you have a tftp server running

be sure you have not a different TFTP server running on the PC otherwise the Manager application won't activate the TFTP server portion of it.
If you have anything using the TFTP port on your PC then shut it off and restart Manager.

I always use a 3th party tftp server and that one tells you if there is already a tftp server or not

you mean the one you use works the way it should be?
that would be a good idea for the Manager program to pop up with a message if the port is already used.
You could also check in the TFTP log if it is doing anything but that requires more thinking.

OK, I have tried loading up a couple of third-party bootp/tftp servers (downloaded from Avaya, following links here) with the same result.

So I am getting very suspicious that Windows (either the firewall or some other component) is getting in the way. I can't configure the Windows Firewall: Windows tells me I have to start Internet Connection Sharing to do that, then reports that Internet Connection Sharing won't start.

So I may try connecting a linux box up to the IP403 with bootp/tftp servers running, and see what happens.

Does anyone think I need older versions of Manager (and if so, any idea where I can get them from)? The version I have is overall release 3.0 with Manager v5 I think and it contains ip403.bin versions 1.99, 2.99 and later.

I use mostly the Manager as a TFTP server, but in some cases I use the Avaya provided MV_IP tel works so far great. I heard good things about the Whitehorn TFTP so TLPETER if you could put it on the server I would love to try it out.

you can do that with any release of the Manager, as long as you have the bin files in the working directory (If you use the manager as TFTP server) and point the bootp to it. You are looking for the ip403.bin
