I was just wondering has anyone tried out the new IP Softphone 6.0 that came out this month? Is it worth the added $$ for the new 6.0 software licenses?

The upgrade should only cost you @ $30 a license ($89 w/o upgrade)... I've placed the order for the liceneses, and am now waiting for the CD. Our BP has mentioned this is on backorder right now. I've also heard that it is not ready for Vista, but Avaya & MS are working together now to remedy this.

Thanks,
CJH

I am still waiting on the cd as well. Why on earth would Avaya release software and not have enough cd's in stock to sell is beyond me...

Got the CD - Installed the software... Then it crashed.

After restart:

Same interface/view as the R5.2.
No formal documentation.
Need CM 4.0 to display 96XX phones.
Can't get Sametime Integration to work.
Can't get Video to work.
Search Public Directory - still doesn't work.

IMHO - Not a very huge improvement~

Thanks,
CJH

Got the CD. Installed it on top of R5.2. Logged in fine, made calls, but when you do a 'list reg' you see it as a R5.2 not R6.0. Strange. I unstalled and reinstalled and the same thing. I connected to several PBX's. One G3, one S8XX0 both running some version of CM. Anyone else have this happen?

If you look at your licenses you'll see it still says:

System
ID Rel Regist. Avail. Limit
IP_Soft 5 : 1 99 100

Not sure what's up with that, but when we asked Avaya they said it won't populate 6.0. No further explanation.

Wierd...

Thanks,
CJH

I just talked to an Avaya old timer working at NACR (Software Specialist), they have the 6.0 CD too and it says "Evaluation Copy!" He said they paid for it! Sounds like this release is a huge blunder...It dosen't work for them either.

Mine looks like this:

IP_Soft : 5 0
IP_Soft 5 : 10 0

I thought the first one would work for any release, so that we can test new versions prior to puchasing it. But that might not be the case.

Another interesting find:

When you status someone that has not upgraded the software you see:

Product ID and Release: IP_Soft 5.236
H.245 Tunneled in Q.931? does not apply
Registration Status: registered-authenticated
MAC Address: 00:10:a4:7e:b0:7c
Native NAT Address: not applicable
ALG - NAT WAN IP address: not applicable
Authentication Type: DES-56-plus

When you status someone that has upgraded the software you see:

Product ID and Release: IP_Soft 5.242
H.245 Tunneled in Q.931? does not apply
Registration Status: registered-authenticated
MAC Address: 00:15:58:2e:74:7a
Native NAT Address: not applicable
ALG - NAT WAN IP address: not applicable
Authentication Type: DES-56-plus

What's up with that!

Thanks,
CJH

Just found this out. IP softphone 6.0 uses the license file from R5. I guess what this means is that there is no reason to purchase an upgrade license from R5 to R6. It is the same.

I loaded R6 on XPsp2 with no problems.

Public directory search has always worked. You may need to have a better understanding of your LDAP domain.

Help documentation in application is fairly reasonable. I loaded it once, and did a nice word doc for all the end users.

Can't speak to other integration issues.

Don't expect to see IP Softphone on Vista soon. Avaya has come out with a Vista support document but IP Softphone is not listed. I would not expect support until version 7.

Avaya changed the licensing so that you don't have to load a new license file every time you upgrade to a new version of IP Softphone. That is also why they removed it from the download page. Also explains why you see R5 RTU taken up by IP Softphone R6.
