Hello

We have an Avaya IP406 PBX. We are currently rolling out Vista laptops and as phone manager pro does not work on vista these users unable to make calls.
Does anyone know of an alternative client that can talk to the IP406 PBX (we're using h323) which works on Vista.
Or has anyone successfully created a h323 trunk to an asterisk PBX with sip clients.
Or and this is the last or, does anyone know of a sip proxy which we can utilize to allow sip clients to talk to the proxy which translates to h323 on to the IP406 PBX.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Jason

Vista support for soft console and PM is introduced in the latest 3.2 and also the latest v4. These are the only supported apps and also, crucially, tapi is not supported.

If you want to dial from outlook you wont be able to.

If you just want straight soft console or PM though upgrade to the latest 3.2 or v4 and this is supported depending on the vista type.

You can get PhoneManager, Softconsole and TAPI working in Vista.

Phone manager and Soft Console are supported, TAPI is not supported. See snippet from tech docs below.

You may be able to get TAPI working but i wouldnt sell a solution on the strength of this because it is not supported and if you have issues you wont get any help from Avaya.

I would suggest that if TAPI worked well they would support it. It has obviously been tested with not very good results.

3.18 Microsoft Vista Support
This maintenance release includes support for the Phone Manager and Soft Console User applications with Microsoft Vista Business and Ultimate editions. In order for Phone Manager or Soft Console to install correctly on Vista they must be installed using the “Custom” option from the User CD or installed using the individual applications standalone installer. The "Custom" install must NOT have any TAPI options selected. Please note that Phone Manager PC Soft phone is not supported on Windows Vista.

unless I'm doing something wrong it does not work for me?

I'm downloading phone manager from here

Using the individual install so tapi is not even an option.

It install fine, I can connect to the PBX ok. It all goes wrong when i make a call, its is so crackly and distorted that words cannot be made out. Its the same problem on every machine. There should be no performance problems relating to hardware as all the laptops are pentium d 2GHz cpu's with 2 gigs of ram.

At the bottom of the bulletin on the download page:

Note:-The Phone Manager PC Soft phone is not supported on Windows Vista.

How nice of them.

Im confused as to why controlling your handset with PM would cause crackles on a handset. The speech is going nowhere near the pc, all you are doing is controlling the handset.

Are you saying that when you control the handset with PM it crackles but if you then close Pm and make the same call again it is clear?

That doesnt add up.

Are you sure you are not doing softphone?

I'm not using a handset, I'm using phone manager and a headset connected to the PC to make calls.

I wouldn't expect there to be any problem using a handset as you've mentioned.

You are using IP phone manager and i believe it is still not supported on Vista yet. Regular phone manager is supported.

That is correct, which is why in my original post I was looking for alternative software or means to connect to the PBX using alternate protocols. Does anyone have any suggestions regarding my first post. This is what I asked if you don't want to scroll back up :D

Ok so you are not using PM, you are using soft phone.

That is not supported as per my original post.

I think you may struggle here.

I Have used Asterisk sat in front of the PRI with QSIG to the IPO and standard q931 out to the ISDN Network works a treat, and easy to setup, also set it up with a seperate PRI card so that the main trunks are not affected is something happens to the * box

I managed to get ms meeting working in vista, which Seems to have better phone quality then that of IP Phone manger in windows xp. This should be a good enough solution till IP Phone Manager is compatible with vista.

Thanks for input

knightzor:

How did you get ms meeting (I'm guessing Live Meeting 2005?) working as an IP phone with the Avaya box?
