I have a windows xp home machine.

but i was not succesful..after some time I decided to give up and connected back my comcast cable modem back to my xp home machine.
now when I do ipconfig I get just windows ip configuration and not the static ip address. I have set tcp/ip properties as obtain ip automatically..did i scre something up..how do i get it right.also could anyone give tips for peer to peer network with win 2000.

thanks bcastner i will give a try..

But now another problem has started. This is in the win 2k machine. It is a compaq presario laptop 1700 series.

The only thing I did in the win 2k machine is assigned a IP address and a subnet mask and added a Netbeui protocol.
Now I screwed win 2k machine also..The problem is now If I want to change my IP address and when I go to TCP/IP properties..the error I get is

"The controls on this property sheet are disabled because one or more other network property sheets are already open. To use these controls, close all these property sheets and then reopen this one." The properties tab is not highlighted.

I deleted the ethernet adapter and added a new one but it is not adding it..also in device manager I get 4 WAN miniports with a question mark with red exclamation.

WAN Miniport (NetBEUI, Dial Out)
WAN Miniport (NetBEUI, Dial Out)#2
WAN Miniport (NetBEUI, Dial In)
WAN Miniport (NetBEUI, Dial In)#2
If I try to remove any of the extra WAN Miniports, I get message that they cannot be uninstalled because they are used to boot up the computer.

I also had a McAfee Firewall and which I have uninstalled now..
I am puzzled of what to do..any ideas to help out..

First, the McAfee software has a known issue with corruption of Winsock services in Win2k and XP after its removal. The Winsock repair tool I linked above will correct the issue.

Second, leave any mini-port drivers alone as a general rule. The system as you discovered creates these virtual devices on an as-needed basis. If you remove the Netbui protocol stack the associated mini-port devices will be removed by the system as well.

Third, the "disabled" property sheet windows should be taken literally. I do this myself all the time where I have the property sheet open in more than on instance at a time. Or, at least try to.

Do the Winsock repair utility on both machines. This will create a relatively clean slate to begin with. To use Netbui in an XP mixed-OS setting, this step-by-step guide by Scott Finnie is a terrific resource:

I did try out the winsockfix.zip and it detected my win 2k and started the repair. But no luck.

Let me leave the wan miniport stuff..my thought was this was responsible for not getting my tcp/ip to work.

I want to get my m/c connected to the internet. So I need to have my adapter and TCP/IP installed. But I cannot do so..When I deleted my adapter and adding it again it says plug and play and adding it but not listing it in device manager..how do i add my adapter and after adding it how do I install Tcp/Ip protocols.

I am going to spend full time today evening on this issue and will let u know..Before that
sorry bcastner to bug you again..
I am not seeing the "LAN connection" in my computer..in network places section.
I see only new network connection wizard and my dial up connection icons..and no LAN connection where I usually change all my properties for tcp/ip etc..

This is the result of my findings yesterday.

On my w2k machine..I tried the winsock fix and tried everything from registry settings to all the microsoft stuff..but no luck..so I have decided to reinstall the operating system..

On my windows xp home machine..I have the internet working..but very slow..and sometimes it does not connect.
when I do ipconfig it still says windows ip configuration and not showing the ip address. But when I go to LAN connection - properties it shows me the static ip address. I hit the repair button after some time pops up with an error stating cannot flush arp cache..etc..whats the workaround on this machine..I tried repairing the winsockxp fix utility..but same problem..
Do I need to remove the network adapter and add it again.

You cannot ipconfig /renew a static IP, but ipconfig /all should show you the static IP information without issue.

A repair operation should return almost immediately and without error.

You can try removing the adapter and allowing XP to rediscover it. But it sounds like a bad adapter board.

On the XP machine boot into Safe Mode.

Device Manager, View, Show all hidden devices.

Remove all but the Wan miniport drivers, and especially remove any adapter that appears grey-ed out in the listing.
