Hi, I have just set up a windows 2000 machine to our network, but there is an IP conflict.

We have a NT4 server, running DHCP.

I can't find the other computer with the duplicate IP address.

Is there a way i can just change the IP address to something else?

Since clients request IP addresses from the server, rebooting the server may not help. Of course it might but not because the server will issue new IP's.

Since this sounds as if someone has set a static IP somewhere try this...

Verify that the NIC on your Windows 2000 computer does not have a static address assigned to it. If not...shut down the Windows 2000 computer. At another computer download the program Sam Spade. This program allows you to perform a lot of test on your network. Using Sam Spade do a tracert. As long as your windows 2000 computer is shut off, the trace should provide you with the IP address and the name of the client it is assigned to. At that point you can decide how to procede.

gtnetadmin, thankyou for your input, I shall try this and issue you a star.

I have however now got another problem with one of the other windows 2000 pc's (we bought 3 new ones) I connected to the network happily, installed all that needed installing, then I did a windows update, and bang all user accounts wiped. Now every time I try to get on, it says Trust relationship between this workstation and the primary domain controller failed.

I have tried to log on locally and add pc to a workgroup to the workstation, delete computer from server manager on the server and then reconnect to domain (as recomended on the microsoft website) but to no avail, what am I doing wrong.

Hosts and LMHOSTS files are in the winnt folder and are up to date.

Any ideas anyone?

You shouldn't need hosts and lmhost files, but sometimes they help. Who are the clients, all w2k? You might want to check the nic on the server for good/bad packets. Had a problem where a few users couldn't authenticate to the domain, problem got worse, found it was the nic on the server going bad. If problem pc has true dhcp and not fixed, do a ipconfig /release ipconfig /renew and see what happens.
all user accounts wiped. Now every time I try to get on, it says Trust relationship between this workstation and the primary domain controller failed. Is this on the server?

Thanks Glen, I have left that job with it's Nitroglycerine filled network, but I am hoping that was the case, purely for research reasons of course.
