a: sockets
b: TCP
c: UDP

Any good text book on TCP/Ip will have a wealth of info on the three of these and how they interact with each other.

The primary difference between TCP and UDP is that TCP is connection based and UDP is connectionless. Connection based transmission provides reliability through sequence numbers, acknowledgements, etc. TCP has the ability to implement a sliding window that is used for flow control.

UDP provides no guaranteed delivery, and packets may or may not be in the same order when they arrive as they were when they were sent. The benefit of UDP, of course, is increased speed due to less overhead.
