I have been though all the postings I can find on this, and although there are some apparently related topics, nothing solves the problem which is:

All our PCs logon to a domain (the domain server is a linux box running Mandrake 8.2). Nearly all PCs are running W2K Pro, 2 are using Win98SE and one using Linux Mandrake 9. Neither of the Win98 PCs nor the Mandrake PC can see either of our 2 shared printers, although they can see shared files on the 2 PCs that act as print servers.

One of the print servers I have just upgraded to W2K from Win98. When the print server was running Win98 we had no problems seeing the printer from any PC.

On the Win98 PCs, File & Printer sharing is set, All machines are using TCP/IP to connect and all PCs can ping each other and connect to the internet.

I have checked that the latest drivers for the Printers (HP1100 & HP2100) are installed, including Win98 drivers on the print server. I have checked permissions on the share, and everything seems to be OK. I have even tried adding the Win98 domain user as an administrator on the print server

Nothing seems to enable Win98 to see a printer.

All ideas will be gratefully followed up.

Fixed it. Just shows what you can do when you read a bit more.

For anyone following this for a solution, here it is. On the W98 PC install the HP Driver as though the printer were connected to LPT1:. Then, from Printer Properties just overwrite the LPT1: details with \\servername\printersharename.

Haven't checked this on the Linux box yet.

There is actually a file on the installation CD that mentions the solution, but, of course the file is called "Readme.txt" and I can't remember the last time I read an installation readme.

Thanks to smah, from another thread about 98 and XP and another HP printer
