I have had Crystal Reports 8.5 for several years now and I created all of my reports using 8.5. Recently, I upgraded to Crystal XI due to needing it for a new software implementation. Well, we come to find out the XI will not be needed and v8.5 will be just fine. So upon uninstalling all versions and re-installing 8.5 I’m finding that none of my 8.5 created reports are opening at all. I’m getting an error message stating: “Failed to open document” – “Invalid Report Version”.

Well, these are all 8.5 created reports so why am I not able to open these reports anymore in 8.5? Does installing XI automatically upgrade each .rpt file?? Is there anything I can do to get these open again in 8.5?

It sounds like these reports were opened and run in XI. Once that happens, they no longer work in 8.5. Version XI is far superior to 8.5 in so many ways, so I suggest you use it.

Just by running the .rpt in XI, doesn't change its version. You must have SAVED it in XI. Once that happens, there is no way back (unless you have a backup of the .rpt files).

Ido is correct, I should have once they are SAVED in XI...

Did you take a backup of your Crystal reports before trying version 11? If so, use this.

Even if you didn't specifically take a copy, the older versions must be saved somewhere.

If there are still problems, there must be something wrong with the re-installation.

I do have a backup of the reports, actually. Thank god. It would have been a lot of work to start from scratch on 20 reports. The backwards compatability issues make sense as well, just thought I would see if there was a patch or add-in that would resolve this.

Thanks all!
