Hi all,

I have a laptop running windows 2000 when I booted it I got the following message;

Invalid BOOT.INI file
Booting from C:\winntNTDETECT failed

I have tried using safe mode, last known good config and non of these work.
the partition is a fat 32 partition.

Any help more than welcome

Thanks
Marzy

Try to create new boot.ini
You can boot from Win2000 cdrom and go to the recovery mode > command prompt. And create or edit new boot.ini
[boot loader]
timeout=0
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT="Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional" /fastdetect

You can also copy boot.ini, ntldr, and ntdetect from a running working machine to a floppy and boot the machine from that. We had an issue where I work where 40 out of 400 computers had this problem all within a day or two. Boot the system, overwrite the bad boot.ini or rewrite it. Should solve your problem.
