Intstallation problem with office 2000

I am trying to install office 2000 onto a recently reformatted pc.

Board........Brilliant 1 v1 xx
CPU..........Intel Pentuim 2
O/S..........Win98 se

Each time i try to install office the following error occurs:-

"Installer has ended prematurely"
"The I/O operation has aborted because of eithier a thread exit or an application request"

Before this error I was recieving an "illegal operation error" concerning msiexec, so i replaced this application with the same application from another win98se pc.

Has anyone got any suggestions?

assuming the win98se installation is A-OK.

Try starting windows in safe mode, then try installing office 2000
