Quick question. I have a 1912 switch and a 2514 router. Is is possible to configure trunking between those two? Lammle's book stated that the lowest router model that supports ISL is a 2600. Any suggestions?

You mean intervlan routing? Not with the 2500 series---ISL or 802.1Q

Burt

So the 2500 doesn't support ISL or 802.1Q?

That's right!!!You will have to get a 1721,2610 with the right IOS,or a 2620.Note there are other models that will support ISL and 802.1Q,but would be a lot more expensive.
You should be able to pickup a 1721 on Ebay for around 130 USD.
Good luck

Hi.

I have a pdf that says:
Code:
The following new software enhancements are supported by the Cisco 2500 series in
Release 12.0(1)T.

IOS IEEE 802.1Q Support:
Cisco IOS IEEE 802.1Q provides support for IEEE 802.1Q encapsulation for Virtual LANs (VLANs). Use this feature for VLANs consisting of IEEE 802.1Q compliant switches.

I'm looking for more info and i'll let you know.

See you.

I don't think that's true Burt.

If you have a router on a stick and set up sub-interfaces, then set the switchport that it's connected to to trunk, you should be able to set up inter-vlan routing. Though, I've been wrong before.

Well, that's the thing---I don't think you can set up subinterfaces on a 2500 for intervlan routing...or is it frame relay it won't do...lemme VPN into my home nw...

Burt

Good question. I don't have any in service, but I've got one gathering dust in a closet somewhere...

I'm pretty sure you can setup ethernet subinterfaces on a 2500... Let me check my lab as well.

Hi,

Yes you can do it:

Code:
Router(config)#int e0
Router(config-if)#int e0.1
Router(config-subif)#

This is one 2514 with 12.1 IOS.

Thanks.

Hi.

You can create subinterfaces but with this IOS it doesn't support any encapsulation, i'll try with one running 12.3 and let you know.

Thanks.

Hi.

No, i can't find any encapsulation cmd's in any 2500 series router i got, i'm not sure if you have to get the right IOS or it doesn't support any encapsulation at all.

Thanks.

Well, I have always heard that you cannot do interVLAN routing with a 2500 period, but then again I never did think about a 2500 series with IOS 12.x, either...I only have 11.3, IS-L. The only things I can do with a subinterface config is traffic shaping, CEF, things like that. You can't even put an IP address on it, though the ? says the command is available. When I tried, it said it must have ISL or 802.10 encaps on it, the commands for which are not available. I conclude that it may be true with a higher IOS. Ya learn something new every day, huh?

Burt

You need a 10/100 interface to do trunking. 10mbit is not enough to carry the inter-trunk messages thus Cisco did not enable trunking for anything below 100mbit LAN interfaces.

I telnetted into my 2514 and you can create subinterfaces but you don't get the encapsulation command. What I want to try is flashing it with a 12.3 IOS to see if you that command is IOS based or if it's a hardware restriction on the e0 and e1 interfaces to run only at 10MB. If anybody has tried this, keep me posted.

rainman is correct about the 10/100 fastethernet interface... Which 2500's had a fastethernet interface?

Hello
The 2500 and 1600 would never support intervlan-routing even if you could load a 12.5 IOS.It something to do with the hardware. To make it clearer not even the 1720 and 1750 supports IEEE 802.1Q and ISL and their hardware are much more recent than the 2500.
The Cisco did a miracle with the 2610 making them support intervlan-routing with the IP PLUS version IOS.But no such luck with the DOOM 2500 and 1600.
Regards

You guys totally rock. I bought that router off of ciscokits.com and knew it was archaic but damn, didn't think it wouldn't support intervlan routing. Oh well.

Hello Rainman
Be advice that the Cisco 2610,2611 and 2612 with their 10MB ethernet interface, can now support the inter-vlan routing with the IP PLUS IOS 12.2 and up.
This will be a little bit difficult for the Cisco Veteran to digest. But when Cisco anounce it they didn't make a fuss, that's why a lots of techs didn't heard about it.
Regard
