Intervideo WinDVD Problems

I have a problem on a VAIO running XP Home, it won't play a DVD at all. I have run the device manager and the cdrw/dvd combo drive doesn't seem to have a problem but it starts to "whir up" as I like to call it so it picks up the disc but then doesn't play it. Anyone have any helpful hints please??
