Is there a benefit to getting track eraser and anonymous surfing internet security software like GhostSurf Platinum? Is it really worth the money and do they provide adequate protection?

It depends on who you're planning on hiding your tracks from.
You can accomplish the things that Tracks Eraser offers without spending a dime using scripts and freeware apps.
Even so, with either method their is still the possibility of traces being recovered if sophisticated enough methods are employed.
Take a look at this thread1117-1085424 for some food for thought.

The simple answer is ... it depends.
Assuming this is a home pc that you are looking to protect:

Spyware protection and ad blocking can be achieved using freeware &/or alternative browsers (check the Virus /Spyware forum forum760 for more information).

Tracks can be erased using simple batch scripts / freeware utilities / browser options correctly. The link you've given gives the impression that data can be completely eradicated from a hard drive - this is not the case: thread1117-1085424

Freeware software firewalls provide reasonable security for the average home user. Many choose to supplement them with a separate firewall device (most decent routers have NATs and SPI firewalls nowadays).

Anonymous browsing is a different matter. However unless you're online 24/7 with a static IP address (which is fairly unusual), the risk of your browsing habits being tracked is minimal IMHO. In addition, my understanding is that anonymous browsing services require some redirecting of pages whilst surfing which may mean a slightly slower internet experience.

I'm sure someone here will jump in and correct me on the above if I'm mistaken, but on the whole I'd save my money and equip myself with a few suitable freeware applications and a firewalled router for peace of mind.

Suggested apps (my personal favourites but not the only contenders): ZoneAlarm, AVG Antivirus, M$oft AntiSpyware, SpywareBlaster.

yeah i have track eraser pro and it works well without having to create a script or anything, but i see that now comes bundled with MS Antispyware, at least a more watered down version of track erasing.
