Internet problems -web works but ftp servers etc dont.

Heres the deal happily working away last night and just after midnight i get chucked from an ftp im working on so i assume hey, time for bed anyway np. Problem is woke up this morning checked my mail, surfed a few sites then went to reconnect and although its up (i called to check) i cant connect to it. So then i thought hmm tried net again np, then i tried a few games i have Far Cry, Unreal 2 XMP and everquest and none of those would connect either.
So now i'm scratching my head i tried everything, reset router, cable modem, reinstalled network card, tried on my fiance computer and all the same problem, internet is fine but anything involving direct connection like ftp, game servers etc wont work.

Aide note:
Just tried windows update, no joy there either just comes back with an error.

Sounds like something is blocking certain ports...someone playing in your router?

Though maybe not directly applicable, the following may provide some useful information. I'm sure others can point you to a more definitive port doc.

Do you have XP? Have you installed a new Windows service pack recently? The newest SP's from MS have upgraded firewalls and can interfere with ports. You might want to check into it if you have done so. Also, are you using any firewall programs? You may wan to try and disable them if you are and see if you can get through. Hope this helps

So, have you asked in the software forums? I don't think hardware troubleshooting is going to fix your problem.
