i go into my control panel (windows 98) and the "internet options" icon is not there; also, when in internet exporer the "tools" option is now removed from the toolbar. does anyone have any idea on how to resolve this issue, or at least a start...
thanks very much

that is probably because of the version of IE you have. in the control panel it shows "internet" not "internet options" and in the browser you would go to view>options/internet options and then you'll find it, however it is not going to give the same options. in order to fix the problem you would need to update to IE 5.0

if thats not what the problem is, let me know so I can know too.

thanks "Jack of all trades. Master of none."

i have win98, with ie 5.5
i beleive it to be adware causing the problem, a program called tdak toolbar.... it takes the "internet options" in control panel as well as in the toolbar... i tried to uninstall the program, but i recieved it with "imesh" and the uninstall prog is not there... i tried to get a hold of the tdak support, and they have not come through for me... any suggestions?? also, they have altered my dns servers, and i cannot change it back to my isp's dns servers.. any suggestions??

there are a number of different anti-ad ware programs out there that i would try useing. that is a very strange thing that it is doing to you though. i guess it would make since, if i were an ad/spy ware programer, i would change the DNS too.

have you tried to "repair" IE through add/remove yet? a friend of mine has imesh and repairing it worked for his adware toolbar. "Jack of all trades. Master of none."

I have tried repairing the IE... but no avail... the dns suffix is what is changing... do you have any idea how to change them back ???

what type of connection is it? dail-up or LAN/broadband

if its dail-up just go to the "server types" tab in connection properties and click the tcp/ip settings button then select "server assigned dns"

broadband will be a little different "Jack of all trades. Master of none."

it is broadband... and i can't figure it out for the life of me...
thanks for the info... getting clearer and clearer by the minute

right-click on network neihborhood and click properties. in the list of components look for the ethernet card or USB device/tcp-ip select it and click properties then on the dns tab you can either unselect use dns or remove the suffix that is giving the trouble.
hope you understand it and it helps!

i sure do understand that... and i am sad to report that my dns servers are disabled, and all obtained through the dhcp process; is there registry keys that can be changed to affect the DNS??

what you could do is go to start then run and enter winipcfg hit enter and on the box that pops up select the correct adaptor. it should then show all of you ip configuration (you may need to click "more info" for everything. then call your isp and compare dns info. if its is the same as it should be you would know we are chaseing the wrong dog.

another thing that would help you out is to run msconfig and uncheck everything in start-up that you don't need useing google to search for the apps that you're not familiar with. then after rebooting repeat some of the troubleshooting steps that you were trying before. remember the ad-ware will be a process so one of them in start-up WILL be the culprit. let me know what happens. i am the isp that is the thing... i work for a company, and i run into this problem at least 5 times a day, and there are no fixes for it... i am in the process of trying to dig a little deeper than just the standard fixes... i have tried all things standard, such as msconfig, winipcfg info, ipconfig info, wins servers, ip info in network control panel, ensured all this is correct, and still the culprit remains unknown... the problem still persists after i run the msconfig "disable startup group items"
anything else?? i appreciate the answers

oh! i didn't see the (ISP) beside your name. sorry for talking to you like you were an end user.

so, is it a customer that you are giving callbacks to? reason i ask is that maybe you should go ahead and install IE 6.0 because the 6.0 install is much different than the others as it installs more completely.

think about it logicaly and you will see that there has obviously been some kind of removal of components. (nothing in control panel and no tools button)

is upgrading possible?

yeah i guess i could try it on my next troubleshooting problem... but i highly doubt it is going to work.. when i ping through the dos window, it cannot resolve ANY hostnames, but i can ping ip addresses, either before i reinstall tcp/ip and also after.. so therefore i think that it has something to do with the dns...

you can always specify the dns to see if it resolves then. "Jack of all trades. Master of none."

always specify dns?? in network control panel or through nslookkup??

no, i was just saying you could try it.

yeah, in network/tcp-ip properties, enable dns and enter them in manually. it won't hurt and maybe will fix the issue all together. well.... not the other crap though. "Jack of all trades. Master of none."

for sure... that seems logical
i will put in the domain suffixes in dns to see if it works... thanks for the info.. i will provide feedback
thanks again man... totally appreciate the help ;)

if you think/research anything else in the mean time... can you send me the info?? this is a chronic problem, and i want to get to the bottom of it

sure, no problem. do you want me to post it or email you? "Jack of all trades. Master of none."

an email from you would be great
