I currently have a dial up service, and the norm is 21600 for connect and VERY slow! Even when it says 28800 it is still slow:

My question for the group is this :

What options are out there for faster connection with a reasonable price?

SPRINT website says DSL not available in my area.
Adelphia Cable is 2000ft away, no cable run, not sure about availablility from them here either.
DIRECT TV operational, and good clear shot to the south, but they are fuzzy about pricing.....

Any other options????

Surely Im not the only person living outside the area for DSL!

Ideas appreciated!

For years I ran BONDed analog Modems on a webramp router, cost 3 phone lines, 3 ISP accounts and only speeds up web, not games or downloads.

Cable has greater range than DSL, but if they do not wish to serve you, they don't.

Should you know the guy 2000 feet from you they do serve, external wireless dishes can go that far, pay him to get cable and send it to you over wireless. (you have to be able to see his antenna)

There are wireless ISP in the US, no idea about VA.

The last trick is to ask neighbors with computers.

I tried to remain child-like, all I acheived was childish.

If the CATV system is 2000 feet away, you might not be too badly off. What's in between you and that 2000 feet? Like the fellow before me said, if you happen to have a neighbor willing -- a point to point wireless connection would be an easy solution.

If not that...

You could definetely do some CATV oriented things, of course they're all going to cost you a good chunk of change for the initial investment.

But before I can ask that -- tell me what lies between you and that CATV system. Is it that your property is really large? And the CATV system is somewhere near your property? If so, you could be in luck... let me know.

There is nothing but 1500 ft of field and 500 ft of trees, all of which is part of my property. I also have access to a house at the road, at a cable tap. Underground cable to me is possible.

Wireless direct path isnt possible due to the trees and two hills.

Local wireless provider is out of range too.....

Love the view and rural life, just hate slow connections!

Well, yeah... you could do fiber -- I'll see if I Can't come up with a quote to give you a remote idea of how much that would cost...

But.

What I would do. Is get some underground RG-11, I'll have to check with some of the guys what signal levels you'd need -- you might have to amplify it once or twice, but I bet you could do it with RG-11.

I think the easiest thing to do though, if you have access to a house by the tap, would be to put your cable modem in that house, and then run some filled two pair drop wire from the house to your house in a conduit (you'd have to splice it at least once, so a pull box intermediate) and then do a point to point DSL connection from that cable modem. It'd be complicated, but once you got it running -- I'm sure you'd be thrilled.

Fiber might be cheaper though.

Anyone tried ethernet over power lines in this application? Chances are the buildings are on the same power lines, so...

Just an idea.

I think you'd have difficulty with the length of how far it is away.

What about wireless point to point? Anyway to get a straight line of site, what if you mounted your antenna on a pole?

Hi Randy

to my very best of knowledge i think the guy explained in the first has the right solution to the problem
get the connection at wherever 2000 feet away and send it across the wireless LAN and enjoy no need to put the CATV connection and bring the RG-11 underground or putting fibre cable in the ground .... the above option would take only few hours at the most but putting cable or other stuff would take days atleast
so go for the wirless point-to-point link and surf at the same speed
that all i would have to say

thanks for bearing and hearing

best regards to all of you
Faieez

I'd agree, if he has a clear line of sight, otherwise... RG-11 is about the only solution I can think of... 2000 feet would require inline amplification as well. Fiber is the best choice, you can modulate television signal over that as well...
