How can I schedule downloads via SMTP through the IMS when it only seems to be possible through a dial up. I have a router!

Errr, Help!!!

Huh? Are you host your own mail? How are you using exchange? Are you trying to collect mail from pop accounts?

The IMS is to be used in a scenario where you are hosting your own mail, that means you have an MX record pointing to the public IP address of your mail server and that IP resolves to the DNS name of your mail server.

Here is the scenario - Once upon a time, our exchange server connected to our ISP mail server via the Internet Mail Service, the service was used to upload and download mail. This worked fine, but then we decided to install a firewall. This meant that we had to ditch our ISDN TA and use an ISDN router instead, so that we could put the firewall between our LAN and our router. After changing each of the machines on our LAN + the server, so that their DNS servers pointed to our ISPs, all was well.

The problem started when we realised that no mail was coming in. The IMS would no longer pick up mail, I assume it was because there is no download trigger available unless you use a Dial-Up connection.

So I tried to download our mail through the POP3 connector instead, and changed the IMS to outbound only, the problem here was that it would download all the mail, but then decide there were no recipients for the mail, and bounced it back.

Any ideas?

All you need to do is open up port 25 on your firewall or forward it using NAT to the internal IP of your exchange server and all should work. As a test to see if you have done this correctly, have someone outside of your network, at home or something, telnet to your mailserver (by IP or DNS name) to port 25 and they should get a response, if not then you have not configured your firewall correctly.

you may also want to double check your settings under the pop3 connector. make sure you have the pop3 accounts mapped to the exchange server user mailboxes. the pop3 connector is a great tool when it works, but we've had flaky issues with it as well. we've sometimes had to reinstall it and that seemed to fix the problems.
