Hi all. I am trying to help out a friend with a problem. She has a dell pc running windows xp home. The problem is when she clicks on the icon for internet explorer the window pops up and then disappears never to be seen again. The same thing happens if she tries to launch her musicmatch jukebox program. Here is where it gets interesting. I can check my email through outlook express just fine, and if there is a link to a website in the email I can click the link and see the website just fine, and then I can continue to go anywhere on the net without a problem. I ran a virus scan and there was a bunch of adware and spyware on the computer that the virus scan took care of. Virus scan also found a Nachi worm so I went to the microsoft website from a link in an email and downloaded the removal tool for the worm. I then ran virus scan again and the system is clean. But it still has the same problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I Thank you all in advance.

Did you try anti spyware software as well? Like Spybot or Spyblaster. Anti Virus software can often detect it but not completly remove it from your system.

Last run taskmanager and make sure you dont have Nachi still running. Check for the following services are installed:

RpcPatch Set to run the installed copy of the worm (DLLHOST.EXE)
Display name: "WINS Client"

RpcTftpd Set to run the copy of the TFTPD application (SVCHOST.EXE)
Display name: "Network Connections Sharing"

Run spybot search and destroy and adaware, this will rid any nasities.
I would try downloading NS to see if that works.
I would also try running the winstock fix

Thank you both for your help. I downloaded and ran spybot. Wow I had no idea that the antivirus software would not get rid of all spyware. So anyway I ran spybot and took care of the spyware and adware. Then I ran the winsock fix. When I click on the internet explorer icon the browser comes up and stays up but because the ip address is not in there it does not connect to the internet, but the browser stays open. Now when I go back and enter the ip address and everything else it goes back to the same problem of opening and then disappearing.

Right try this
Right click on the connection
click on general (or at least its general on my LAN connection, sorry im not on 56k you see)
Click properties on Internet Protocal Ip/TCP then tell it to obtain ip adress automatically and obtain DNS server automatically.
This might fix your 'no-ip' issue i think its what you make reference to.
I would also wipe out your current connection and remake it.
Then try also make sure that IE is your default browser in my computer >
Tools > Folder Options > File Types and then make sure that HTM and HTML are properly associated
