I have a problem on a machine where Internet explorer won't open a message window saying an illegal operation etc and needs to close, inform/don't inform MS etc.
System is Windows XP Pro with SP1.

Tried system restore no luck.
Tried MS question base on the subject no luck.
Tried re-install Windows XP Pro no luck.

Could there be a virus got on machine, ZA is on machine and everything else seems to work fine including Outlook Express DUN works fine on OE.

Any help would be grateful
Regards John.m

After your reinstall did you remember to do all your Windows Updates again?

Make sure your options in IE/ Tools/ Internet Options/ Advanced are correct.

Uncheck the boxes for "Install on Demand" for IE and Other programs (two boxes).

Try running temporarily with the third box "Enable Third Party Browser Extensions" unchecked and see how this goes.

"This specifies that you want to disable features you installed for use with Internet Explorer that may have been created by companies other than Microsoft.
If you encounter problems with Internet Explorer that you cannot resolve, you can use this option to help determine if third-party features are causing the problems without uninstalling the feature. You must restart Internet Explorer after turning this option on or off."

If that stops your errors, you will know where the trouble is.

This article and the program BHOcop might be useful to you.

I will try the BHocop, but I cannot get into Internet Tools as the browser will not run.

Is it possible it may run in safe mode.

Also done the Adaware and spybot programs with no luck.

If I get enough info I will try on Tuesday next week at which stage if can't get to run I will bring to my workshop.

Thanks John.M

Ramesh MVP, notes:

When you click the Internet Explorer icon, window may flash a second and quits. Or, it may show an Error-Reporting dialog. This may be due to a malware Browser Helper Object which causes Internet Explorer process to terminate. If you see the Error-Reporting dialog, click "to see what data this report contains" and identify the Module Name causing this error. In most cases, it may be the malware DLL; in which case, reinstalling Internet Explorer may not help. To test with: Disable third-party browser extensions in Internet Explorer using this REG file: or following these steps:

1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
2. Double-click Internet Options.
3. Click the Advanced tab.
4. Under Browsing, clear the Enable third-party browser extensions (requires restart) check box.
5. Restart Internet Explorer.

NOTE:
Try to open Internet Explorer again. If you are able to open Internet Explorer, then, the problem was caused by a malware BHO. Disabling third-party browser extensions is just a workaround and does not eliminate the root of the problem. Use Toolbarcop and spot the malware BHO causing the problem:
In addition, you can and should use both AdAware and HijackThis! without IE being open: see faq608-4650 Either program will let you remove malware.
