Hi, As of yesterday my copy of Internet Explorer 7 will not connect to the internet - yet Firefox does. I connect using an Ethernet cable to a Belkin router.

I ran the IE network diagnostics and got this:

Code:
Network location detection

info Using home Internet connection
Network adapter identification

info Network connection: Name=Local Area Connection, Device=Broadcom 570x Gigabit Integrated Controller, MediaType=LAN, SubMediaType=LAN
info Network connection: Name=1394 Connection, Device=1394 Net Adapter, MediaType=LAN, SubMediaType=1394
info Network connection: Name=Internet Connection, Device=Internet Connection, MediaType=SHARED ACCESS HOST RAS, SubMediaType=NONE
warn This machine has more than one Ethernet or more than one Wireless adapter
info Redirecting user to support call

HTTP, HTTPS, FTP connectivity

warn HTTP: Error 12007 connecting to [URL unfurl="true"]www.microsoft.com:[/URL] The server name or address could not be resolved
warn FTP (Passive): Error 12029 connecting to ftp.microsoft.com: A connection with the server could not be established
warn HTTP: Error 12029 connecting to [URL unfurl="true"]www.hotmail.com:[/URL] A connection with the server could not be established

error Could not make an HTTP connection.

error Could not make an FTP connection.

When I enter an URL - IE gives me these errors:

Code:
Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage
Most likely causes:
You are not connected to the Internet.
The website is encountering problems.
There might be a typing error in the address.

Well - I know I'm connected to the net because I'm writing this on the same pc using Firefox.

I've played around with the IE connection options (auto detect settings etc) and none of them work.

I've tried turning off the firewall but still got the same problem.

Am baffled - any help greatly appreciated.

Cheers,
Matt

Check to see if you do not have a PROXY set, this can lead to the symptoms described...

Thanks Ben but there's no proxy set.

Check for a firewall running as well and if present disable it and see if browsing is restored.

Run several full anti-spyware scans (windows defender, avg, spybot, adaware) - including hijackthis - this behaviour is most commonly caused by spy/malware.

Check out the Internet Explorer add-ons installed - one may be blocking some/all sites.

I was running into this problem with IE7 and Vista. I have 2 adapters in my PC, 1 wireless, 1 wired (not connected). I never did really trouble shoot it very far.

I noticed in once in a while I could get to various websites, sometimes I just couldn't.

Try disabling your wired adapter (or wireless, whatever the case may be) and give 'er a try.

Have you tried things like cleaning out your Temporary Internet Files or running IE with No Add-ons via System Tools?

I've taken all the above advice but Still no joy. None of my spyware packages will update (clue?) - I ran AVG, SpyBot, Ad-Aware,Hijack-This and Windows Defender but everything looked ok.

I can still connect using Firefox.

This is doing my head in!

You could try uninstalling it and reverting to IE6, if that works you could have another go at installing IE7

I wonder if there is anything unusual in your Hosts file in C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc folder?

I have just read this thread and there might be some other things to try from the "solved it" comments at the end.
