Hi,

I have Windows 2000 server and recently created a new user account.

In the new user account I cannot launch Internet Explorer - all of the following options launch the Windows Explorer:

- Launching Internet Explorer using the program menu
- Launching Internet Explorer via the iexplore.exe file in - Program Files/Internet Explorer/
- Launching Internet explorer via Start>Run>iexplore.

Also note the following:

- From the Windows Explorer I cannot open a URL (opens another Windows Explorer window).
- If I double click on a local .html file IE6 opens correctly.
- I have re-installed IE6 but the problem remains.
- The problem only occurs in the newly created user account (administrator still launches IE correctly).

Can anyone advise why this might be happening and how I can resolve it?

Many thanks,

Gary

Can you try re-creating the account again or try creating another account just to test if it does it again?

Hi,

I actually created 2 new accounts 1 called "Bob" and 1 called "Default". Both users are members of the Users and Power Users groups so have wide ranging permissions.

The behaviour of IE is identical in bother new user accounts (the Windows Explorer is launched in all of the previously stated attempts to launch it). In the Administrator account IE behaves normally. I also tried adding the new user accounts to the Administrators Group - but IE would still not launch.

Mildly baffling...

Is there a default profile for your users, roaming etc...?

If it's happening to the new accounts you're creating, try scanning for viruses or spyware. This would be my first action and then take it from there. Looks like something might have changed the registry.
