internet connection protocol

Hello!
I made a serial cable and I manualy connected it to the cable I have between the modem and the serial port.
Thus I can intercept all the data the modem sends to my PC and the other way around.

My question is : what protocol is used in communication?
(packet format)

Is it a PPP protocol sending IP packs of TCP pack?
I am really want to know.
