I have a gateway computer running with a cable modem internet connection. I ran a registry cleaner and antivirus on my windows 98 computer and a situation arose. Anytime I start up Internet Explorer, i just get the "page not found" message.

The internet works on another computer using the same router, so the cable service is not to blame. I unplugged everything and plugged it back in to no luck. I can ping the DNS servers, the gateway, and the IP address. I removed/reinstalled the driver to no luck also. It won't ping to either.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Assuming ie6, try repairing it option in add/remove programs)

Try installing Mozilla Firefox and see if that has same problem (don't import anything from ie when you install). Often firefox will work if there is a connection, but problems with ie.

btw - does the registry cleaner (as you've found, can be dangerous software) have an undo/restore feature (most good ones do) - so you could go back to before scan.

Other option - scanreg (98 keeps 5 or 6 copies of registry usually, and you can restore earlier one using scanreg /restore (after booting to a command prompt - option from safe mode menu after pressing F8) - if there is one from before your clean.

Hi wolluf, thanks for replying.

I tried so many things to get my internet working again, and finally found the problem.

So, I guess a spyware file I deleted messed up the winsock registry so i had to delete and re-add the winsock registry.

I'll have to remember that one for next time...
