A PC running Windows XP with IE6. Connected at present via a router, although it has previously been connected via an ADSL modem.

IE6 works fine. However, Ad-Aware will not update over the Internet. Spybot Search & Destroy will not connect over the Internet and Norton AntiVirus Live Update will not update. Email will not connect to collect pop3 mail (or send via SMTP) although it previously did and in the account settings, connection is not specified although I did at one point set it to connect only via the LAN.

Windows Critical updates have been dowloaded and all except 5 updates installed. The remaining 5 failed. Norton AntiVirus has only just been installed. Ad-aware and Spybot will accept manually installed updates but not webupdates. Both have been run and all Spyware found (quite a lot)has been removed. IE is set to connect via the network and there is no proxy set. Other computers connected to the same Router are working OK.

I am completely out of ideas. Can anyone help.

Thanks

Colin

Colin might sound a bit obvious but have you tried reconnecting via ASDL modem?

If you try this and it works then it seems likely that your router is blocking some types of traffic.

Thanks. I have actually resolved the problem. I had disabled Zone Alarm but it appears to have kept some services running which were stopping the connections. Removing Zone Alarm was all that was needed.
