Hi all.

I need to implement an user internet access monitoring solution on Windows Server 2003. I also need to be able to back-track to see what users across the network have been viewing over the past couple of months.

Which is the best software for this? Is there a way of doing using our SonicWall firewall software?

I have never done anything like this before so I am totaly clueless!

I need your help urgently!

Many thanks.

Joe.

I'm not sure you can do this without using some kind of proxy server. We use ISA 2004, but that may be overkill if all you need is to report on Internet usage.

Thanks, but are there not any stand alone applications I can install on the server?

Initialy I need to get a list of users viewing history, then we need to implement a policy, blocking defined websites.

Thanks.

HI,

We use a program called freeproxy by handcraft software. It is as the name suggests free which is good. We have 60 users and don't come accross any problems and we run in on a XP pro PC

Hope this helps

I use Surf Control for windows servers. It's very easy to use and doesn't need to be inline. Just plug it into a port that is mirrored with the gateway and it intercepts all traffic. It can not only monitor all web traffic like http and the like, it also can monitor ftp, smtp, webmail, im traffic. Basically all that stuff. You can setup rules to block some type of content or traffic all the time or setup hours of use. Like allow online games at lunch time kind of thing. And it's smart to proxies and web caching. It keeps all info in a mssql database. Either your own SQL or the desktop engine. Could be a little pricey for you depending on how many users though. I paid around 5 grand for software plus 3 years maintenance.
