Hi,

We wanted to use Exchange 2000 for groupware use (shared calendar and shared contact).
So, Exchange will be installed in Internal network, not accessible from outside.
We already have a External SMTP server, and all user are using pop3 to retreive their emails.

Do you know how to specified to Outlook (Or maybe a parameters in Exchange) only to use external SMTP server for all emails.

Meybe there is a tips in Exchange to do that.

Thanks

I am not sure what execatly you are trying to explain here.

Either you use Outlook in corporate mode, in which case Exchange handles all mail traffic, in and out.

Or, you use Outlook as before, POP3, in which case you just fill in the correct SMTP properties in your Profile(s).

This is the so maniest post on having an Exchange server, but not using it for what it is build for.
I really wonder why everyone makes it so difficult for themselves.
So, out of curiosity, why do you not have Exchange handle it all?

I explain :
We already have an POP3/SMTP Server, hosted outside company.
We wanted an Exchange for Groupware use. But this Exchange server will never have internet access, neither can be access from internet ( so no mail received and no mail send). We couldn't changed everything...

We wanted to disable all smtp/pop3 features in exchange, so that no user could send email through exchange ( becasue in that case, outside user never received their mails).

My problem is that by default, with two mail account set-up in outlook (one for mstp and one exchange), everytime the default send server is exchange !!! And imagine the problem it can cause !! No emails delivered, and for internal mail, never read by outside users!!!

I hope that it is more clear

Thanks

If you really want a mix like that, you have not much choice as to split the Outlook Profiles.
One for Exchange only (corporate mode) and one for POP3 mode, internet mail.

In Exchange, you just don't configure any SMTP Server, and nothing will ever be sent. If someone tries anyway, it will fail.

But, it would make more sense to get all external mail into Exchange, you would not have al the troubles, and have one point of access, and, above all, more control and security.

It's a very expensive groupware solution. One of the benefits of exchange is it's mail integration with the groupware features of shared calendaring & tasks. I would suggest going down the route of configuring exchange for mail as well as groupware functionality or looking at a different package just for groupware, e.g. eGroupware - it's free. One of the other issues is that meeting requests & tasks get propogated via mail so the mail feature is hard-wired to the groupware features.

If you do use Exchange as it's supposed to be used you can still have all the mail delivered to that external system but instead of the users pulling the mail off to their clients Exchange would pull it into it's message store. When mail is being delivered, if it is for an external host then the mail would be sent to the upstream smart host for relaying.

This has the added security advantage that on your firewall you can restrict POP3/SMTP access to Exchange only so your users don't go off an infect the internet with worms/virii. Much safer.

I agree. Either get another package for groupware functions, or use Exchange as it was meant to be used...WITH EMAIL!

Good luck
