internal domain external website DNS issue

Hi, we've got a slight problem with our DNS which I can't seem to get my head around. Perhaps someone can shed some light:
Our internal domain is, say for example, ourdomain.co.uk
We have an external website

http://www.ourdomain.co.uk

and we have another subdomain my.ourdomain.co.uk - We cannot seem to browse any of our externally hosted websites with the same name (ourdomain.co.uk). The way it works with the hosting company is

http://ourdomain.co.uk

is the root domain and the other subdomains 'hang' off it, ie. my.ourdomain.co.uk is in fact

http://ourdomain.co.uk/my

Our internal DNS has two entries in the Forward Lookup Zone of :
NAME Type Data
-------------------------------------------------------
(same as parent folder) Host(A) 172.16.1.4
(same as parent folder) Host(A) 172.16.1.5

Are these entries perhaps the culprits? Any ideas?

Maybe. What's the zone name served by the internal server? If it's "ourdomain.co.uk", and you only have those two records, then that's your problem. If your Windows domain name is "ourdomain.co.uk", then there's a bigger problem here, but I'll assume for the moment that it isn't.

Your externally-hosted website doesn't have an address of 172.16.1.x. You need to add records to your DNS for ourdomain.co.uk and my.ourdomain.co.uk with the public addresses at the hosting facility. If Windows uses the same domain, then I don't know the answer except to change Windows' domain name or use "

http://www.ourdomain.co.uk"

for the main site. Windows looks up its domain name in DNS to find AD conrollers.

our zone internally is "ourdomain.co.uk" - we have a lot more other records aside from just those two A records. Since this post, I have added another A record which points to the webserver of host externally which works fine for

http://ourdomain.co.uk

and

http://www.ourdomain.co.uk

Unfortunately our internal Windows domain is in fact ourdomain.co.uk - I know - it should be something like "ourdomain.local" - but I didn't setup the network in the first place..........
the real problem now exists with this "my.ourdomain.co.uk" - because of the way the host have it setup, it is actually the same as "

http://ourdomain.co.uk/my"

so when I put an A record for my.ourdomain.co.uk it just takes me to the main website which is of course not what I need it do.

Any ideas?

If you can resolve the address, it should work the same internally as externally. It sounds like there are virtual hosts on the web server.

If you can resolve

http://www.ourdomain.co.uk

and my.ourdomain.co.uk to the correct IP addresses, the DNS is working ok. It now seems like an Apache or IIS setup issue on the server itself.

I just spoke to support and they said the external DNS for my.ourdomain.co.uk is pointing to the wrong IP address, so I have changed that on my domain name hosts, so I'll wait for the changes to update before I can check it.

Did you get the problem resolved? I have run across the exact same issue, and would appreciate a detailed explanation of the "A" records you input to solve the problem. I am not too much on DNS administration.

Hi Dale,
Yeah I did get it solved...
I created a blank parent A record pointing out to the IP address of the external website host. Basically just create A records on your DNS server to point to the IP addresses of your host out on the internet. So now if I browse to

http://ourdomain.co.uk

it will resolve the IP address of the external host and display the pages from our website externally. And the same goes for

http://my.ourdomain.co.uk
