I have a dell laptop and I am having a problem with it playing DVD media/movies. It will play CD's and other non-dvd media just fine.

In troubleshooting, I connected a external MadDog CD/DVD/DVDRW USB drive and the laptop does the same thing.

I also thought it was WMP, but it does the same thing no matter what playback software I attempt to use.

I removed the drives from device manager, rebooted, laptop detected and installed drive and still have the same problem.

I can just rebuild the laptop, but want to explore all avenues before I do that?

Any other ideas?

You need a codec package or a media player that can handle DVD movies/videos.

If you're just interested in getting the movies to play, try one of these media players:

VLC Media Player
The KMPlayer
Otherwise, you could try one of the codec packs that are available, and it'll cover everything as well: Sharky's codecs pack, k-lite, CCM or something like that - community something-another.

I guess I should have noted... DVD playback worked up until last week.

I dont really think It's a coded issue. I have tried installing several other DVD playback software packages and VLC (which I swear by and use on all my machines) doesn't work.

that is a strange one, seeing that you tried an external USB and the internal DVD...

I am assuming that you have tried several different DVD Movies, just to rule out that one or maybe a couple DVD's are just not playable on either the USB or internal drive...

the question is, what had changed between last week, where it worked, and the point where you noticed that it did not anymore?

e.g. software install, AV or Firewall updates, or even driver updates...

things you could attempt:

Chipset driver install/update
reinstall CODECS, e.g. K-Lite Mega Codec Pack ( )
