Hello

I have Exchange 2003 SP 2 running on Windows Server 2003 SP 1. I am occasionally receiving non-delivery reports for users with the main body of:

"This is an automatically generated Delivery Status Notification.
Delivery to the following recipients failed.
/O=OURCOMPANY/OU=FIRST ADMINISTRATIVE GROUP/CN=RECIPIENTS/CN=JSmith"

and an attached .txt file that reads the following:

"Reporting-MTA: dns;frontend.ourcompany.local
Received-From-MTA: dns;mail.ourcompany.net
Arrival-Date: Tue, 6 Jun 2006 10:59:36 +0100
Final-Recipient: x-ex;/O=OURCOMPANY/OU=FIRST ADMINISTRATIVE GROUP/CN=RECIPIENTS/CN=JSmith
Action: failed
Status: 5.1.1"

When the user who receives this NDR re-sends the message it sometimes goes okay and sometimes doesn't until they try again the next day. We have a frontend server (frontend.ourcompany.local) which handles Webmail but doesn't relay any SMTP traffic and a backend server that handles SMTP traffic and mailboxes. The server mail.ourcompany.net is a UNIX SMTP server that receives mail for our domain and passes it on to the backend server. What I don't understand is why the NDR comes from frontend.ourcompany.local as most NDRs come from the backend server.

I have no idea why this message is occurring as the mailboxes are there and the recipient is receiving mail okay. It just seems to be the occasional message not getting through.

I have noticed that when viewing the Global Address List in Outlook the e-mail field for users who get the above problem contains the following (NOTE the number after the mailbox):

"/o=Ourcompany/ou=First Administrative Group/cn=Recipients/cn=jsmith90175602"

I'm not sure why this is although we wondered if it was because when creating these mailboxes we first did a 'Remove e-mail address' in AD Users & Computers, and then 'Create Exchange mailbox'.

I am completely at a loss with this and would appreciate any help that you could give me.

Thanks for your time.
