Digital and IP voice paths aren't subject to crackle, crackle is an analogue issue (like Dig TVs and streaming video don't get that fuzzy picture/white noise like old analogue TVs would). So you may well find it's introduced into the voice path by the analogue stations or by faulty curly cords at either end (that part is analogue signal)

Indeed, but it rules out a fair chunk of expensive stuff and the link being at fault and points him at the correct avenues of investigation
