Hi,

I am looking to bulid a few cheap computers. I have seen a few mainboards that have the modem, video, and sound on the main board. I remember seeing these boards really cheap. I just don't remember where I saw them.
Got any ideas?
thanks,
Stephen

I've said many times on site and others, I will never recommend anyone to buy PCChips boards and I will always tell them to stay away from PCChips. Yes, there's the argument that some people just can't afford another brand, but then there's the argument that it's simply not worth buying a cheap computer if all it gives you is headaches.

I've personally put together a few computers with PCChips boards - simply because of their attractive price. Each motherboard turned out to be buggy, unstable, horrendous driver support (the cd was missing some required files to install the network card...). I remember every time trying to install drivers for an HP printer, Windows would lock up (this was right after a fresh install). Their boards also have the strange ability to slow down over time even with fresh OS installs - just search the internet for other's reviews on this company.

On the other hand, more and more of the big name companies are coming out with boards based on the SiS 730 chipset (if it's an AMD processor you're looking for), an example is the Asus AS7-VM, with integrated video, sound, and network. You don't have to pay Asus prices, there are others good boards out there, the ECS's board has been discussed in this forum I know.

Bottom line is, there are better ways of building a cheap computer then buying a PCChips mainboard - those boards are simply not worth the headaches.

Don't know if I dare say anything after last time!!!
I personally havn't had too many bad experiences with the newer PC chips boards, and you obviously have had, Dakota81.
I have also noticed some SIS 730 chipset based boards being released and personally had a favourable experience with the ECS offering, I used a K7SM???????? I think it was, last week, No problems at all!! one of the easiest installations I have done recently with good performance for a *budget* board and yes! better than PCchips.

Ha! My influence is actually spreading! I admit I'm probably a little too biased for my own good, though this is the only company I really speak out against. I put together like five computers with PCChips boards one year, and this was back with the Pentium MMX and the K6-2 cpus. Took me like two extra hours of setup time for each mobo, funniest thing was, each mobo was flakey in a different way, which made them even harder to work with.

Atleast back then PCChips did have a monetary advantage, as there weren't really any other brands making integrated boards, back when modems and nic's were $50 each, and the cheap pci sound cards were $30. Three years ago a PCChips computer was like $150 cheaper then the best competition. You don't see this price gap anymore, with modems and nic's under $10 each, and sound integrated into all motherboards. And especially now with SiS's 730 chipset offering performance, stability, and a low price tag, big name companies are coming out with integrated motherboards - there's hardly a reason to give PCChips another chance.

But that's just my opinion. =)

Agreed! now there is an option I would go with a SIS 730 based board.
There is no dought that the one ECS board I tried last week was of better quality and performance than the PCchips 810 offering usually used.
I know what i'll be using from now on in my BUDGET builds . Martin Vote if you found this post helpful please!!
