The cable should be a lot cheaper than the laser.
I'm using copper cables for short distances (<5m) for as many of my 10Gb links as I can now. Saves a lot of money.

Thank you. So the cables are copper and the other ones are fiber? Is there a limit as far as speed that can be transmitted over these two wires? Both ports on the 3560g switch are gigabit so I think that is the limitation.

That's what makes them cheaper: no lasers on the link.
I suppose you should get the same kind of speed as you would get from a fibre link.

The CAB-SFP-50CM is a 50CM cable with SFP transceivers at either end. They are used to connect two switches together over short distances (50CM). If you were to use 'normal' SFPs (1000BaseT, 1000BaseSX or 1000BaseLX/LH) then you would need two of them plus the actual cable to connect them together (either copper or fibre depending on the SFP).
Although using copper or these short interconnect cables is cheaper over shorter distances than the equivalent fibre (SX) SFPs I'd recommend fibre. Its quicker to react if the cable is broken or removed (there is a white paper on this somewhere) and its less likely a user would unplug it as its 'different'.
