hello folks, Gracie here.

I have here an Intel 440lx board I have put a hard drive on with Win 98 SE installed on it and have fallen foul, it seems, of a problem with the hard drive controller. The parent is working properly but not the primary ide controller, and so the disk is not running at optimum speed or efficiency.

I discovered on Intel's site that they do not support the 82371AB/EBPCI Bus Master any more and specifically say that it was not meant for Win 98, but that if you upgrade to Win 98 and experience problems, to use a v32 installer utility ( I think) to deal with the problem, which they point you to - but when you get to the page it isn't there any more. Hmph.

I installed the 440LX chipset infinst_enu, but that installed the Bus Master as well. I have tried removing and hoping a generic or standard one will kick in instead but no...

Is there a way round this do you know please, or is there something I can do to get the primary driver to be recognised?.

I said I would give the computer back to its owner Thursday ( oh foolish Gracie), I am just helping the guy out and I would like it to be a good experience for us both

mm, went there earlier but for what do I look?
After I posted I went back to device manager and changed the Bus Master for a standard dual controller - but now there are exclamation marks on both primary and secondary controllers, and there are no hard drive names or properties still. Maybe the problem is more than just a wrong controller driver.
Don't quite know where to go from here... glum Gracie

SE didn't have a descriptor file for some intel bridge chip resident. So the IDE controller stuff loaded the wrong stuff giving the errors on the mangler.

if you trace down my email address and forward a request message I'll try to dig out a copy to send to you.

You could also try to find the file on the gateway site, think it probably the same chip as used on the gateway 2000.

Or on the Intel download site, the .inf correction file to desktop 440 boards. I think that is what you want.

I re-read the beginning and see you have already been there.
Didn't remember the file name until I double checked at intel and verified back to your first post.

After trying a few more things without success I thought I would try another computer, I got one out and booted it just to remind myself what there was on it. It has millennium, and guess what, it is the same board i440lx, but THAT one is running fine with no problems. I upgraded to ME on the problem drive, but that made no difference, I switched the problem drive to the other computer, and that made no difference either. So now I am putting ME on a reformatted drive and will have the problem one as its slave, to see what happens then. If the master is ok then I s'pose I will have to re-install all the applications and copy the docs and stuff over (sigh) and buy a copy of ME for the owner, oy vey.

Gracie
