Hello

I've got a intel430tx Pci motherboard with a 166mmx oc to 200mmx. I want to upgrade the processor, but the manual says only 233mmx possible.

I remember reading a while back that either

1) you can do something to get a faster processor to work in it.

2) you can get faster processors that don't use the normal multiplier settings.

Is there any more information on this, or can anyone tell me anything. I'd like to get to be around 550mhz if possible. (And it must be cheap).

Not really feeling pulling out the motherboard.

Cheers

Chris

omg this is a tough one !

you might get as far as 300mhz by OC a 233/266 processor - but expect instability. Speed relies alot on RAM speeds these days and your mobo will probably supporty only PC66 memory. How much memory do you have? 64 is good for most things, 128 for multitasking (web browser/word/outlook all open for example), 256 is plenty.

Suggest you reconsider that motherboard - look for AMD 450/500 or celeron 600 CPU's and boards as a cheap step. Otherwise, bite the bullet and go for duron+mobo for less than 120$

Someone once told me, if you can't go double the speed on an upgrade then don't bother!
You will have to bite the bullet as has been said if you really want to notice the differance! Martin

Provided your MoBo supports a CPU-Voltage of 2.0V - 2.4V you could switch to AMD K6-Processors (don't forget to upgrade your BIOS before).

Your Mobo does not need to support high clockmultipliers. Select a multiplier of 2x and those AMD CPUs will run with as much as 6x!!! That is, if your FSB is 66MHz you can go as high as 400MHz, with FSB 75MHz, 450MHz!

Try to get an AMD-K6+ (2.0V) or AMD-K6-III (2.4V) for they have built-in L2-Cache which allows you to cache more than the puny 64MB of the TX-Chipset. (K6-2 runs@2.2V)

Perhaps you'll find a store which still sells one of those CPUs, otherwise you'll have to look in around in ebay or a similar auction-plattform or in your local newspaper

AbuNidal brilliant. This is something like what I thought I had read in the past. The cache thing is good as well because I have 128ram and wondered about that before.

Just for confirmation if I have a 430tx and motherboard suports voltage 2.0V - 2.4V I can use the k6-III chips.

I'll check the details.

Cheers

I've checked and I think I'm going to be upset.

I have a bus speed of 66mhz and my multiplier is 3.5.

But my voltages I have options as follows. NB there is a vio and vcore voltage

Vio Vcore
3.5 3.5
3.3 3.5
3.3 3.2
3.3 3.0
3.3 2.9
3.3 2.8
3.3 2.7
3.3 2.6
3.3 2.5

I haven't got any lower than that 2.5 is near 2.4 though is that good enough?

Can someone explain the point of voltages and what the difference is between Vio and VCORE.

Can I do anything else to make the voltage lower apart from change the voltage settings?
