Insufficient Memory To Inialize

Hello All,
I am trying to install win98 on a machine which has Vista as a dual boot. After numerous attempts with a boot disk I finally got the program to get to where it install the files, but upon bootup I receive the message "Insufficient memory to initialize remove memory resident programs or unnecessay programs from autoexec or config.I am at another computer so I dont have access to either the auto or config files.

If I use windows 98 SE boot and run the OEM Setup then it will run scandisk and go through the routine of unmatched FAT and change the FAT and then hang up upon trying to install. If I run the plain setup file it will try to install and then I get the above message.

Specs:
Home Built PC
2 X External Drives 320 Meg
Western Digital HD X 2 160 GB Each
2 GB Ram
Reformated (1) of the 160 HD AS FAT 32
Vista Installed on one of the drives
Use Fdisk to set up Drive and formated disk for as primary dos drive. Can get to a "a" dos prompt.

Windows 98 is having trouble with the 2 GB of RAM on your system.

U do no that u will not be able to access 98 while in vista and vice versa? and u should of installed 98 b4 vista as it causes problems, ie 98/ 2000/ xp installed in that order, i have a dual booting system but cause 2000 xp and vista all use NTFS where as 98 is FAT32 u cant convert backwards. i think this maybe more your problem than ram as you have plenty unless its DDR2 98 doesnt support DDR2 as its to old of an operating system for it to reconise.

It appears that Vista is on one physical HD, and 98 is going on the other physical HD. If so, then Vista does not have to be installed after 98. That's applicable only when both OS's are installed on the same HD.

how about plugging the w98 external drive 2 that pc and edit autoexec and config?
i recommend u using a sw like vmware or virtual pc 2007, there u have vista as host system and u can install 98 as client without probs and run both simultanious

in DUAL BOOT, w98 has to be integrated into vistas boot manager, so it has to be installed prior to vista

u can install w2k, xp and vista on a fat32 formatted drive without probs
w98 doesnt see if the ram is ddr or ddr2, that doesnt make a difference

Lemon think i didnt say that well, i no those can run FAT32 with no probs just meant that if its in NTFS u cant go bk to FAT32 without formatting that drive, and thx for saying about the dual boot, thought i was taught wrong for a mo lol. and about the ram ok though it might not accept the newer stuff,

If 98 is installed on a different physical HD and the boot drive is selected in BIOS, then Vista's dual boot mgr. and the installation order become irrevelant.

I am having the exact same problem. New blank system with 2Gb RAM, and the message implies insufficient memory. I have read the MS Knowledge on this and applied the 768Mb limit in system.ini as suggested.

Unfortunately, this made no difference, I still get the same message! I even tried reducing the MaxPhysPage to 10000 instead of the 30000 suggested, but still no difference.

Any ideas?
- Apart from reducing the actual memory to <768Mb!
