Instant Messaging and firewall 1

I would like to set up Instant Messaging between my home and my office. I have a Linksys router at home that acts as a firewall and our large network at the office has a firewall. Will the firewalls keep me from using instant messenger programs? Thanks.

If the network admin has blocked the port used for instant messenger then the work firewall will stop you from using it.
